(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 24, 2008 ) San Angelo, TX- The American Emu Association (AEA) Board of Directors was joined by states presidents at their annual mid-year meeting January 19 and 20 at the Holiday Inn Select in Nashville, TN. Founded in 1989, the AEA is a nonprofit organization of breeders, producers and marketers of emu meat, oil and other emu co-products. AEA's mission is to establish value of emu products through research, market development and industry positioning. A Board of Directors elected by its members governs all AEA activities. Through the voluntary efforts of its members, the AEA has worked to develop a consistent numbering system and nomenclature for cuts of meat, gained mandatory USDA inspection of emu meat at processing, gained acceptance for the emu into the National Poultry Improvement Plan, has established international trade rules for emu oil and created an Oil Certification Program to ensure the consumer a safe product. The AEA publishes the EMUpdate, a bimonthly newsletter, several industry flyers and sales aids along with the National Convention handouts.
Discussions during the meeting included agriculture and legislative issues as well as upcoming industry events. AEA sponsors National Emu Week (NEW) each year to educate the public about the emu industry and the products derived from this farm animal. Held the first week in May each year, events for 2008 will take place from May 3 – 11. The AEA National Convention will take place in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania July 18-20.
"Emu are grown in this country without the use of growth hormones or antibiotics in their feed. They produce a high-protein, low-fat, nutrient-packed red meat," reports Joylene Reavis, AEA Agricultural Affairs Chair. "The meat is similar in taste and texture to lean beef." Reavis went on to say, "Emu meat is available either vacuum packed frozen or fresh." Emu meat and emu oil products can be mail-ordered from individual producers or found at retail in specialty food stores, health food stores and retail establishments around the country. The AEA office receives calls periodically from consumers looking for the lean red meat or emu oil products. "We can provide them with a list of companies that can handle their request, or provide their contact information to the companies," said Reavis.
