- Luxury Villas Menaggio (from £445,670, 2 or 3 beds, completion March 2009)
- Investment Village Varenna (from £144,772, studios, 1 or 2 beds, prime location)
TheMoveChannel.com gives an insight into the attraction of Lake Como.
Location
Close to Milan in the north of Italy and south of the border of Switzerland, Lake Como (Lago di Como) is surrounded by mountains and hills and is one of the most famous lake destinations in the world.
The lake is around 400 metres deep, making it one of the deepest in Europe.
Getting There
The nearest major air terminal is MilanÂ’s Malpensa International Airport, which has numerous airlines from around the world flying there.
Train travel is also possible from Milan, from where trains leave for Como every hour, with the journey taking around 90 minutes.
The best way to travel around Lake Como, visiting the various towns and villages, is by bus or ferry, the latter being excellent for sightseeing.
Attraction
Lake Como is shaped like an inverted “Y, “ with the northern branch beginning at the town of Colico, while the towns of Como and Lecco sit at the ends of the south-western and south-eastern branches respectively.
The mountainous pre-alpine territory between the two southern arms of the lake, between Como, Bellagio and Lecco, is known as the Larian Triangle, or Triangolo lariano.
Similar to other lakes in Italy, Lake Como has been a popular resort since Roman times and nowadays visitors are drawn to the area due to its blue waters and wooded lakeside slopes. The towns that surround the lakeÂ’s shores are frequented by tourists.
Spring is the best times to visit as it is less crowded and the weather is usually pleasant, whereas July and August, although most popular with tourists, tends to be busy, hot and humid.
During the winter, some services may be closed, but thereÂ’s always skiing in the nearby mountains to keep you occupied.
Places to Visit
The Lake’s main town is Como, which has an impressive cathedral, or ‘duomo’ that is part Gothic and part Renaissance in style, with tombs inside. The town is also known for its silk – it has a silk museum, and is home to the famed silk manufacturing store of Mantero.
The quaint little town of Tremezzo is just across from Ballagio and has beautiful botanical gardens that sit in front of the magnificent Villa Carlotta, which was built at the end of the 17th Century.
Bellagio is a stunning town, located at the junction of the two 'legs' of the lake, with the Alps visible to the north. The liveliest of the local towns, Bellagio is so popular that a casino in Las Vegas was named after it.
Laglio, located in the south western end of the lake, was brought to the worldÂ’s media attention when Hollywood heart-throb, George Clooney bought two villas in the area (Villa Oleandra and Villa Margherita). (Eager to expand his Italian property empire, he has been trying to buy part of a beach there and was made an honorary citizen.
Property Scene
The property market in Lake Como rocketed, along with tourism, once Mr. Clooney showed an interest. Since he spent £5.04 million on his first home in 2002, the actor's 25-room mansion has now probably doubled in value, according to the local La Provincia newspaper.
With the addition of millionaire entrepreneurs, Richard Branson and Ryanair owner, Michael OÂ’Leary, the area has become more and more exclusive.
Despite ItalyÂ’s rental laws that favour the tenant and a slowing economy, foreigners still bought a lot of property in Italy in 2007. The area of Northern Lakes, which Lake Como is part of, was one of the top five regions for property purchases, probably due to its proximity to northern cities, good skiing facilities and natural attractions.
The second phase of the Investment Village, Vareena, offers impressive one to four bedroom apartments in a fantastic location near the best part of Lake Como.
The project is on a hillside overlooking the town of Bellagio across from Menaggio - Lake Como's 'Golden Triangle'. The development is in a convenient location, just one hour from both the Malpensa airport in Milan and the Bergamo airport, as well as being 45 minutes from the smaller Lugano air terminal via Menaggio.
Dan Johnson, Managing Director, comments:
“Famous for its stunning scenery, silk shops and George Clooney, Lake Como is one of the most seductive places in Italy.”
