(EMAILWIRE.COM, June 28, 2011 ) On Monday, June 27, 2011, Nike, Inc. (NYSE: NKE) announced earnings for the companyÂ’s fiscal fourth-quarter. Earnings rose to $1.24 a share from $1.06 a year earlier, and revenue went from $5.08 billion a year ago to $5.8 billion.
Last quarter the sports-gear maker missed analystsÂ’ expectations, since the last time in 2006. NikeÂ’s net income this quarter was $594 million, up 14 percent. The companyÂ’s margins were affected due to higher costs of raw materials, and the companyÂ’s gross margin dropped to 44.3 percent. Much of the reasons for this were due to higher higher transportation costs, including the high fuel surcharges and royalty expenses. Nike, Inc. has tried to lower its production costs, but selling and administrative expenses saw a growth rate of 2 percent.
Out of all the emerging markets, ChinaÂ’s revenue growth was the highest. Emerging market revenue was up 25 percent this quarter, while revenue in North America was up 22 percent, compared to 5 percent in Western Europe. Japan revenue was the most effected due to the March earthquake as its revenue dropped 17 percent.
Nike, Inc.Â’s shares are up 0.54%, trading $81.62 a share as of 4:54 PM EDT on 06/27/2011.
