New Mesothelioma Research

(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 05, 2011 ) According to a recent study published in the international journal, Mutation Research, cellular proteins may be the answer to why some people are more predisposed to acquiring mesothelioma.

Chinese researchers may be close to finding an answer to the question plaguing scientists – Why do you some people get mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases while others do not? This medical mystery why those who work around and handle asbestos without the appropriate safety gear contract mesothelioma and whereas others in the same environment do not has baffled the the medical community for quite some time.

The research could not only help determine who is at risk for contracting the lung disease, but it could also help other medical researchers develop new treatments to help combat the disease. It could also give doctors new targets for treating mesothelioma or other complications.

The researchers focused on cellular proteins because these proteins are the signals that control most cellular activity. To conduct the study, the researchers decided to look at three cell groups: healthy mesothelial cells, healthy mesothelial cells that were exposed to asbestos, and malignant mesothelial cells.

They found that the cells that had been exposed to asbestos had 16 protein mutations and the malignant cells had 21 protein mutations. Most of the altered proteins were those that involve DNA damage repair and cell cycle regulation.

Asbestos exposure is the main cause of mesothelioma. When asbestos fibers from are inhaled or ingested they become lodged in the tissue surrounding the lungs, heart and abdomen. These areas become inflamed and recent research has found that these fibers actually mutate cellsÂ’ DNA which causes uncontrolled cell division. Uncontrolled cell division is the hallmark of most cancers.

Mesothelioma is one of the most deadly and aggressive forms of cancer. Currently, there is no cure for the disease and those affected may not feel any symptoms for up to thirty years after initial exposure.

The research study results may help physicians and other medical professionals identify those who may be at risk for contracting mesothelioma. Also, medical treatments that target the levels of these key proteins may be a way to control mesothelioma which is notoriously difficult to treat with existing treatment regimens.

The material, asbestos, was used frequently during the twentieth century as a common flame retardant. Many individuals who have contracted the lung cancer, seek legal advice from a mesothelioma attorney as many manufacturers of asbestos knew of its dangerous effects but did not inform the general public.
