Michigan Amateur Boxing Event Friday Night Fights

(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 10, 2007 ) Livonia, MI -- Boxing fan, Rob Schollenberger, said “I was a huge boxing fan from my youth through early adulthood - in the days of Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, George Forman, Boom Boom Mancini, Tommy Hearns, Sugar Ray Leonard, Leon Spinks, Mike Tyson and scores more. I remember spending countless hours glued to the television set watching these superstars and others - pummel each other to no end. So, when the STLD first heard from our pal Dan Collins of Logo Bar Gear - that a local boxing gig was in the works, we immediately sprang into action to help out. And man-o-man, are we glad we did. This was by far the coolest thing happening in these parts for quite sometime.”Fight Night Friday was organized by the Chairman of the Michigan Boxing Commission, Al Low. Al is also the Al in Big Al's Promotions. And, what a guy Al is! His career has spanned the world of boxing from touring the world with heavy weight champ - Leon Spinks to being Tommy "The Hitman" Hearns promoter and staging the largest attended boxing match in Detroit history. Big Al Promotions sole purpose is to support "local" amateur boxing clubs and to ultimately raise enough funds to build a Michigan based training camp where amateurs can train right alongside the pros. And what a worthy effort it is.Never thought of it before, but boxing is a very 'humbling" athletic endeavor where the edge to victory is sharp. It's more than just a "finesse" sport - trying to beat others to a bloody pulp. It's actually an awesome family oriented "character" builder of an activity for today's youth. Rob Schollengergder Said “I watched in awe as fathers coached their boys on to victory and or consoled them on their defeat. What a way for young men (and women) to build character, confidence, humility and most importantly - maturity. All of life's lessons wrapped up into an "individual" sport - learning, training, working, competing, losing, learning, training, working, competing, winning, competing, losing, learning, training, working, competing, winning and on and on - being true champions along the way. But I digress, like I said, this was one cool event. The place was packed and a good time was had by all in attendance as they sampled some Jim Beam, Jim Beam Black, Absolut, Absolut Citron, Canadian Club and watched 17 bouts of boys compete on their way to becoming men. The competition was intense and electrifying. These kids meant "business" as each tried their hardest to win! I have to say it was more exciting to watch these young MEN than watching the so-called pros. The intensity of each bout, the concentration of all participants, the tenacity, sportsmanship and good "clean" fights were a joy to watch. In my book, they are all champions!
