Tips for Treating Fire Ant Bites

Many people do not know that the United States has native fire ants and others that bite. Like harvester and other “biting” ants, the fire ant attacks in a two-part process. First the ant grabs the skin with its mandibles and then stings – as many as 20 times before releasing. The venom injected into our bodies releases histamine, similar to that produced by our bodies, which in turn produces pain, itching, swelling and redness of the skin. The welt can enlarge rapidly and form a small blister. Over the next few hours the fluid in the blister will turn cloudy and the area will begin to itch.
