(EstateNewsWire.com, September 26, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- Brickworks, parent company for Bristile Roofing, will lay off 25 workers at their Caversham plant before Christmas. The company cited the use of cheaper Spanish imports as the reason for the decision to close the plant.
Lindsay Patridge, managing director, said Bristile would have required upgrades to its manufacturing facilities to match the Spanish products cost effectiveness.
“We would have had to invest something like $35 million to refit the factory,” Mr. Partridge said. “It would have taken us 12 or 18 months,” Patridge said. “All these factors have impacted on our ability to manufacture them cheaper than what we can bring them in from overseas,” he added.
Bristile penned an exclusive distribution deal with the Spanish manufacturer, La Escandella, in July for Western Australia and New Zealand. However, the firm would continue its production of tiles in the Eastern States.
Brickwork’s subsidiary, Austral Bricks, also experienced cutback in Washington due to an industry slump, as well as the emergence of Len Buckridge’s Brickmakers. Austral closed in July. Mr. Patridge added that no further cutbacks in the state were currently required.
“We hope WA will be one of the stronger markets going forward because of the low vacancy rates and strong employment growth,” Mr. Partridge said. “The market should improve over the next six to 12 months.”
