Firemen Skeleton-Key Sold on eBay, sparking concern reports Locksmith San Antonio

(EstateNewsWire.com, October 20, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- Some New York City leaders are alarmed as a former locksmith recently attempted to sell a set called “firemen’s key ring.”

The five keys are capable of opening nearly every elevator, stop-light boxes, subway gates, and even some firehouse doors. The One World Trade center construction sites may also give access to the keys, as well as other construction sites around the city.

The obvious concern for officials is that the keys will end up in nefarious hands, which could mean possible havoc for law and public safety officials.

Daniel Ferraris of Union City was attempting to sell the keys on eBay for a reported $150. The listing has since been pulled, however officials are concerned that the number of sets may already be in the wrong hands.

New York City Public Advocate Bill de Blasio called the sale a major threat to all New Yorkers.

“We cannot let anyone sell the safety of over 8 million people so easily. Having these keys on the open market literally puts lives at risk. The billions we’ve spent on counter-terrorism have been severely undercut by this breach [sic],” de Blasio said in a release.

A New York Post writer was able to test the keys, and stated that many of the keys worked. The particular keys were embossed with a FDNY lieutenant’s shield number, 6896. The keys are standard issue for members of the FDNY.

Two of the keys on the set were those used by city electricians. The keys are used to gain access to street lamps, basement circuit-breaker boxes that can be found on any large building.

“There can’t be any delay in closing this vulnerability. The City must repurchase any remaining keys or block their sale. We need a swift investigation into how these keys fell into insecure hands in the first place. And we need protocols in place to prevent a breach [sic] of this magnitude from ever happening again,” de Blasio said.

Former FDNY and NYPD Commissioner Howard Safir also made a point to comment on the situation.

“These keys are issued to firefighters for emergency situations,” Safir told the Post. “Just anyone having them is very dangerous.”
