ItÂ’s time to book a kid-free vacation for stressed Parents reports StJohnVillaVacations.com

(EstateNewsWire.com, October 17, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- Admit it, if you could you would love to take a trip to the Carribean, your favorite mountain resort, or even Disney World without dealing with kids. Even if you love your children dearly, it’s appealing isn’t it?

"I go places during the week when the crowds are smaller, I'm not anti-kid or anti-people," wrote Matt Hodgetts on CNN’s Facebook page. "I just find it more enjoyable to be at the zoo/museum/shows when there are less people around."

Rick Swartz, another Facebook commenter, wrote, "kids are great, just not during a vacation. My own kids are grown and gone. I like a little peace and quiet on vacation."

The good news is that now is the ideal time for that children-free trip. After all, most kids you would otherwise pack along on a journey are back in school. That means adults have the freedom to pay cheaper airfare and hotel room prices, thanks to what the travel industry calls its shoulder season.

The shoulder season typically occurs between Labor Day and Memorial Day weekend, when most travelers go back to school or work and airplanes and hotels empty out.

According to KAYAK, travelers heading to Las Vegas, New York and Chicago the weekend after Labor Day saved 8 to 10% on airfares. A KAYAK spokesperson noted that travel prices pick up again Thanksgiving weekend through New Year’s Day, then drop again until spring.

"You won't just get peace and quiet, but good weather and low prices," says Clem Bason, president of the Hotwire Group. "Everyone in the U.S. still thinks of summer vacation and that's when you take your vacation. People are sort of resistant to traveling in the fall and winter. They should go. You can't really lose on any angle."

American Express Travel recommends South America’s Buenos Aires of Argentine, Patagonia in the south of both Argentina and Chile, and Cartagena of Colombia for those looking for hot destinations this year.

Eastern European destinations such as Montenegro and Croatia continue to attract travelers from all over the globe. European airfares typically drop in price during the fall and winter.

Those hoping for a look at autumn finery should consider a rail tour of the Canadian Rockies with its many forests before winter arrives.

Other North American destinations popular in the fall include California’s Napa and Sonoma vineyards, many of which offer specials connected to the autumn harvest, according to American Express Travel. To ensure your trip is adults-only, check with your hotel to confirm it is for those ages 18 and older.

Another tip, said Travelzoo senior editor Gabe Saglie, is to make sure you understand the meaning of “adult” resort before you book. "On some resorts, 'adult' can mean risqué while on others, 'adult' can mean upscale, quiet and private,” he said.

Speaking of resorts, Travel + Leisure recently named Mexico’s adults-only Live Aqua Cancun the No. 1 resort in the country in its readers’ World’s Best awards. The resort offers celebrity chef-inspired dining, spa treatments, eight pools and ocean access.

Wine lovers might prefer to stay at the adults-only Kenwood Inn and Spa, located in California’s Sonoma Valley. The resort offers a private wine bar and Italian-influenced cuisine of a top chef. U.S. News ranked the Kenwood a top wine country hotel.

The Glenmere Mansion of New York, once a private retreat for the very wealthy, is an adults-only hotel close to Hudson Valley museums and Hyde Park’s Culinary Institute of America. Even its two fine dining establishments are adults-only.

Saglie recommends child-free cruises, such as those offered by Carnival UK’s P&O Cruises. "British-owned P&O Cruises has a fleet of seven ships, three of which are exclusively for adults and offer a smaller-scale, more intimate cruising experience," he said. "Though not readily marketed in the U.S., they feature several exotic itineraries."

If you aren’t looking for an entirely child-free vacation experience, a visit to a Disney theme park might fill the bill. Although some parents take their children out of school for a visit to a Disney destination, there are always fewer children there when school is in session.

Sheryl (a child psychologist who did not want to give her last name) and her partner are annual passholders at Disneyland, where they visit six times per year. "For me it helps to enjoy the experience when I have reasonable expectations," she said. "I had very different desires and expectations when we went to Disneyland for our honeymoon than when we had a family reunion during spring break. Our honeymoon was during an off-season and our experience was more adult focused.

"Our family reunion had to occur during a school holiday for the children in our lives," she said. "I went in knowing there were going to be crowds and families, the occasional meltdown and need for children-appropriate negotiation. Both holidays were fantastic and very different."
