Texas Replaces WomenÂ’s Health Care Clinics with Crisis Pregnancy Centers reports MarieStopes.org

(EstateNewsWire.com, October 17, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- Almost 111,000 women without benefits in Texas used to be well served by the Texas Women’s Health Program. That is until Governor Rick Perry barred clinics that mention or promote abortion from inclusion in the program. With this change came a decision from the U.S. Government to cut 90% of the Women’s Health care Program’s funding. This lead the state to generate the $38 million to pay for what was considered “morally acceptable health care,” through the governors new stipulations.

Many in Texas as well as other states are crying foul because in the United States, abortion is legal. It is also not legal for the state to restrict the rights of patients’ choice of providers if the providers meet the standards of Medicaid covered care in the U.S. This has affected lower income women because now, they just cannot find care.

Physicians want to get paid and if there is a promise of no payment from both the patient and the government then many are opting out of providing care. This combined with funding cuts, has caused the clinics still in operation to charge more money to offset costs. Thus, women are now not able to pay for some of the simplest needs, like exams and birth control pills.

In an attempt to remedy this situation, governor Perry has created “crisis pregnancy centers” which are there to “protect a woman’s reproductive rights.” The crisis centers are medically licensed to help women make other choices than abortions for unplanned pregnancy. It was not until just recently that these centers even provided true medical care to women. Formerly the center only provided counseling and “education” in the form of Bible Study. Now centers have nurse practitioners on staff to give pap smears, STI disease testing, and treatment in addition to counseling.

People are still upset however their legal rights are not being met and the state is not helping with the true needs of women, reproductive health care and family planning. It is also clear that Rick Perry’s vision for women’s health care is clear and his plans for the women of Texas are not helping women make the best choice for them or their families.
