(EstateNewsWire.com, October 06, 2012 ) Auckland, NZ -- With the recent devastating earthquake that hit Christchurch, and scientists warning of the possibility of more powerful earthquakes in coming years, many New Zealand residents are scrambling to protect themselves against future damage and destruction. According to a report in the “New Zealand Herald,” scientists are predicting that the Christchurch area faces a 72 percent chance of being hit with an earthquake in the 5 to 5.4 magnitude range, in the next year.
According to figures reported by GNS Science, the city of Christchurch has experienced 58 earthquakes that have measured at a magnitude over 5 in the past two years. Scientists also report that there is a 31 percent chance of an earthquake measuring in the 5.5 to 5.9 range to hit the Christchurch area in the next year.
With the growing earthquake concern at the forefront of many people’s minds, it’s important that residents take a careful look at insurance, particularly with the high chance of powerful aftershocks in the coming year, says Isreal Hartley, of the website my-insurance-guide.co.nz.
The website is a free, comprehensive online insurance resource that helps New Zealanders save time and money when purchasing insurance.
“A lot of people, not just in the Christchurch area, but all of New Zealand, are worried about damage to their home and property because of earthquakes, particularly as scientists are warning residents that strong aftershocks are nearly inevitable,” said Hartley. “Now is the time for people to start preparing, and one of the best ways to do that is to shop around for the best insurance for your needs. You don’t want to be caught after the fact of an earthquake, either without insurance or with inadequate insurance. That’s a very scary position to be in. You want to feel like you’re prepared, and protecting your home and family.”
A recent report also from the “New Zealand Herald,” shows that a number of Christchurch residents are experiencing problems when it comes to insurance claims following the earthquake.
According to the story, many Christchurch residents have said they are angry with the length of time it is taking insurance companies to process their claims. The report also says that while insurance companies have made a bit of progress in completing claims for repairs, it is usually minor repairs that are being completed, like cracked sidewalks or driveways, rather than the bigger jobs, including rebuilding of structures.
“When it comes to insurance for your home and property, what this situation has shown us is that it’s not only about finding the insurance company that is going to provide the best rates, but you also need an insurance company that is focused on customer satisfaction, and providing a timely response to claims and repairs,” said Hartley. “That’s why we offer a valuable resource like my-insurance-guide.co.nz; it’s important for consumers to be educated about insurance, because the Christchurch earthquake has shown many people in New Zealand that the service you receive is very dependent on the company you choose, making an informed decision your best tool for future situations that may arise.”
