(EstateNewsWire.com, October 08, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- For over one and a half weeks, the auditorium of the Terre Haute high school, South Vigo High, has remained closed down. The closure was due to the extreme deterioration of the ceiling, which was infested with asbestos. Last month the deterioration became so bad, that a piece of the ceiling actually broke off and came plummeting down onto the seating area; fortunately no one was hurt.
After the fallen piece was retrieved, and sent off for scientific examination, results revealed that it did in fact contain large amounts of asbestos. As of then, the auditorium was ordered to be shut down.
On October 4th, Dan Tanoos, Superintendent confirmed that the auditorium would remain closed over the autumn school break.
As part as safety measures, all parents received prompt phone calls informing them of the events and the conditions of the school auditorium. The school’s principal, Chris Mauk also notified members of school parent clubs and groups.
So far the school is deemed safe. Air quality tests have been ordered for all Vigo high schools, North, South, and West. The tests results were conclusive and there seemed to be no asbestos present in the air.
Terre Haute South is scheduled to be closed from October 12th until October 15th. Senior night which is on October 12th, will be at the school, however no one will be allowed inside the school.
While the autumn break is on, the ceiling will be removed; however it is not expected to be replaced until the summer. At that time, North Vigo High School will also have it’s auditorium ceiling removed, as a mere precaution, as both South and North Vigo were both built at the same time.
Superintendent Tanoos stated, “I don’t want anyone to feel any possible exposure could take place,” He went on to say, Because public school buildings are involved, the district must adhere to strict environmental regulations”
The estimated cost for all the repairs is said to be about $80,000.
