(EstateNewsWire.com, October 16, 2012 ) San Francisco,CA- Mark Zuckerberg, founder and co-owner of Facebook has broken his silence on the company’s work on searching and the potential it has for exploiting its position in the market in the future. Though Google’s dominance of the field is unquestionable, speculation as to how and when Facebook will leverage its data potential has been rife for a long time. As Facebook hit a billion users last week, Zuckerberg has acknowledged that it is “pretty uniquely positioned” to respond to the evolution of search.
Google has made no secret of its future as an information portal, the next step on from its traditional use of keywords to produce results, a process which Zuckerberg referred to as “some kind of magic”. The social network mogul confirmed that Facebook now receives a billion internal searches daily, and added “and we’re not even trying.”
Facebook’s massive network of friends, likes and individual searches certainly gives it an unparalleled platform upon which to build an alternative, more natural, user-friendly approach to the way surfers experience the Web. Digital marketing agency Greenlight recently estimated that the site could capture a quarter of searches worldwide overnight were it to launch a search engine, rising to 50% within only a year or two. Greenlight chief operating officer Andreas Pouros added: "it wouldn't need to be a spectacular engine either, just well integrated into the Facebook experience and generally competent".
With a dedicated team working on search, there is no doubt that Google may have competition in the future as Zuckerberg continues his ever-ambitious approach to developing its services. The News Feed service, for example, commonly used to update users on activity amongst their friends, may well evolve to become a window upon the Internet as a whole.
