(EstateNewsWire.com, November 14, 2012 ) Fort Myers, Florida - Indoor pools have always sat at the top or very near the top of wish lists for people drawing up plans for the ultimate dream home. Some manage to achieve their dreams of indoor pools, while for far too many others it turns out to be structural engineering issues that end up bursting their bubble.
Building a home is one thing, and every custom home has its own set of engineering challenges that are overcome along the way. The same thing applies for standard inground pools, because they, too, will tend to have their own occasional engineering problems that pop up as they're being designed and built.
Combine the two together however, and the structural challenges tend to multiply by exponential proportions to the point that for many new home builders they're just too high a mountain to climb. This particularly holds true in areas of the country that are prone to earthquakes.
Areas like the West Coast of the United States, for instance, where active fault lines have led to stricter guidelines have ensured the integrity of home and commercial building foundations. It has been these guidelines that, for instance, stipulate the greater distance that a pool must be placed away from a foundation.
This, in turn, means that the actual buildings that contain indoor pools in these geographic areas must be built wider in order to remain in compliance. Then bigger wider buildings present their own separate list of costly engineering challenges due to ceiling and roof spans that then require steel beams and framework for support.
Then to make matters worse, there are moisture issues that have to be taken account when the materials that a building is to be constructed from have been selected along with the building techniques.
The problem here is that a swimming pool contains a huge amount of water, with a standard building being designed is to keep the water outside because most standard building materials are subject to decay when exposed to constant ambient moisture.
So it's not the cost of the indoor pools but rather the cost of the buildings that have to be built to contain them that all too often puts the kibosh on dreams of owning one. Buildings that must be substantially larger, constructed in accordance with stricter guidelines and using costlier materials and methods.
Of course there are always size considerations to be taken into account when any swimming pool is being designed. That is that the smaller the pool is, the less it's going to cost to build and the same thing applies to indoor pools.
But when it comes to plans for standard to larger sized indoor pools, it is by far the cost of the building in most cases that tends to pull the plug on it.
