(EstateNewsWire.com, November 14, 2012 ) Orlando, Florida - California has now become the first state in the US to completely ban the sale of a popular oil-based VOC additive, which for generations, paint companies have relied on to make their product more usable. Oil-based paint is a superior product to water base in many applications but it has a well-earned reputation for not being user-friendly.
It was the addition of this popular additive that was often the key to a smooth even finish with maximum surface adhesion, an additive that's no longer available in that state.
VOC is the acronym for (volatile organic chemical), and for some the word 'organic' can be a bit misleading. This is because everything that's manufactured or derived from organic substances is good for the environment, and that includes any number of solvents categorized as VOCs.
So California legislatures who have for decades been leading the way in passing environmental protection legislation have now become the first to make this move.
As the old saying goes though, 'everything begins in California' and moves east from there, so it's expected that other states will in due time follow their lead on similar legislation.
So to find out more about what home and business owners can expect from their local paint companies on their building improvement jobs, we contacted Orlandopainters.net, where in a recent phone interview their company representative was able to lend us some of his insight.
He told us that, “The move in California against VOCs in the painting industry isn't something that just popped up overnight; rather it's been a gradual ongoing process. For example, for decades now California has limited the size of the containers that they can be purchased, so popular paint additives that used to be available in five gallon containers were only sold in quarts. Now out here in Florida we don't have any problem at all, so we can buy pretty much any volume of any type of paint additive that we need. However, out west in states like Colorado it's a different story. Colorado has always been one of the first states to follow California's lead on environmental legislation, so how soon they enact their own restrictions will be some indicator of how fast it's going to spread to the rest of the nation, if it does.”
He went on to point out that the law in California that bans the sale of the VOC oil-based paint additives doesn’t it makes it illegal for paint companies to use them on their jobs. Rather, it only bans retailers from selling to the general public.
So California paint companies are still using them to blend into their oil-based paint, but they're having to drive across state lines to purchase them, which of course is one more added cost that's passed on to their clients in their job bids.
