Ex-Major League Pitcher Pascual Perez Killed In Home Invasion Robbery reports Lock Smith San Antonio

(EstateNewsWire.com, November 14, 2012 ) San Antonio, TX- Police in the Dominican Republic reported ex-major league pitcher Pascual Perez, who spent 11 often-turbulent seasons with four different teams, was found dead in his home, the apparent victim of a home invasion robbery.

Perez’s body was discovered by his former wife during an early morning visit to his home in the town of San Gregorio de Nigua, west of the capital city Santo Domingo, where he lived alone. Police said the house had been ransacked, and Perez had been repeatedly hit with a hammer, suffering a fractured skull. He appeared to have been dead for around eight hours when he was found.

Police later arrested three suspects and are seeking two other fugitives. The police department’s head of criminal investigations said one of the men arrested, described as a minor drug dealer, knew Perez personally and admitted he and four other men had planned to steal Perez’s $2,400 monthly baseball pension check. Another suspect was arrested after he sold one of Perez’s cell phones for $6.25.

Perez, now 55, signed with the Pirates as an amateur free agent in 1976, came up to the big leagues in 1980, and ended his major-league career in 1991 with the Yankees. He also played for the Expos, but had his best years with Atlanta, where he pitched between 1982 and 1985. He went 15-8 in 1983 and 14-8 the next year. The right-handed hurler compiled a lifetime record of 67-68. Perez helped the Braves win the 1982 National League West title. He explained missing a start during the pennant drive in August by saying he missed a beltway exit and then spent nearly two hours trying to find the stadium.

During his career, Perez drew two suspensions for drug use. His second suspension came in March 1992, after he failed a drug test on the day he reported for Yankees spring training. He had been slated to start the final season under a three-year, $5.7 million contract, but never pitched in the majors again.

Two of his brothers also made it to the majors. Carlos Perez, a left-handed pitcher, played for the Dodgers and spent six seasons in the big leagues. Melido Perez, a right-handed pitcher, played nine years in the mayors, four of them with the Yankees. He is also the mayor of the town where his brother Pascual was killed. "It is horrible what is happening in this country," Melido commented. "You're not even safe at home."

The president of the Atlanta Braves issued a statement of condolence after Perez’s murder was announced, saying that the pitcher “left his mark with the Braves organization and will always be remembered fondly by Braves fans."
