Community Groups Try To Win Big with Beautiful Gardens reports HPotter

(EstateNewsWire.com, November 18, 2012 ) Coeur d Alene, ID -- The Okehampton Community Garden is a place where people can come to grow plants, vegetables, or other things, for free. The plot not only provides a place for growing, but also gives a chance for community bonding as friendships and connections are made.

The garden was recently nominated for an award by £££s for People Campaign that would bring more money to a community garden looking to grow. The garden says that if they win the award they will build a polytunnel to the site near Fatherford Road. The polytunnel will allow people to visit the garden during bad weather, and also allow for people in wheelchairs to be able to visit.

Kay Bickley, the garden’s treasurer, said that while the garden is great for the community, it is often rendered unusable during stormy weather. The tunnel would correct this problem and maybe even influence more people to come. Bickley also said that any money from the Campaign would further go towards building a children’s area of the garden where the same type of friendships could be made.

Another group hoping to get some money from the Campaign is Exeter Community Hospital League of Friends, which focuses its efforts on brightening the days of patients at the hospital. The League of Friends said that if they were to receive any money, they would first redo the patio area of the hospital by purchasing new garden furniture and making the patio accessible by wheelchair.

Overall, there are 60 different groups vying for the £20,000 pot that the Campaign has to offer. While Western Morning News and the Devon and Cornwall Community Foundation are working together to run the Campaign, they have decided that the winnings will be divided based on the number of votes that each group receives. It has also been decided that the minimum for each group no matter how many votes they receive will be £100.

To vote for your favorite group, use the coupons seen in the daily paper. All votes must be in by December 7th to count.
