(EstateNewsWire.com, November 20, 2012 ) City of Baltimore, MD -- A vertical garden consisting of 3,000 hanging plants on sidewalk fences are helping to beautify the grey concrete landscape of Kalayaan Avenue in Barangay (village) Central.
Since one year, the welcomed sight of a vertical garden extends approximately 180 meters from the streets of Masigla to Maparaan.
Barangay Chairperson Josephine Velasco credits the idea to Mayor Herbert Bautista and says that the residents really like it. Velasco said the mayor suggested building the wall of hanging plants when she requested a beautification project in her community. The community is predominantly a shantytown and the area along Kalayaan is a slum area which covers about 6,000 square meters of government land. The objective is to brighten up the view.
Construction of the vertical garden started with building the metal fence six months ago, followed by the plant installation. Each plant is contained in small black plastic pots and strung by wire on the mesh. The installation includes plant varieties such as golden philodendrons, callisia, and pinya-pinya.
City Hall workers manage the upkeep of the vertical garden, replacing plants when necessary.
Velasco said Masigla Street was once literally without trees and not very green. He is now encouraging his neighbors to help water the plants because it is a project for everyone. It also helps to brighten up the mood of the community.
Another resident, Salvador Estornenos, is pleased that his grandchildren can now run and prance about along a wall of leaves and vines, instead of playing on the dusty sidewalks. Estornenos says that at least they have real plants to see when going out of their houses.
