(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 19, 2008 ) US Senate Candidate Laurie Dobson of Maine has issued a 12-point emergency economic recovery plan to forestall the onslaught of what she calls “the coming Bush depression.”
Dobson, who is running as an independent for the Senate seat now held by Republican Susan Collins, previously proposed a five-year moratorium on all residential and commercial foreclosures.
Her expanded program includes universal healthcare coverage, tax reform that shifts the burden from the middle class to the uber-wealthy, and the impeachment of President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney.
The complete text of her plan is at www.dobsonforsenate.com/.
NEW REVENUE FOR UNIVERSAL HEALTHCARE
A 1% tax on the sale of all securities and financial derivatives will generate approximately $5 trillion of new revenue, Dobson said. “That’s enough to fund Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, and expand Head Start, Food Stamps, WIC and Veterans Administration hospitals.”
It would also provide comprehensive tax relief for small business, enabling them to pay employees a living wage. She proposes an immediate increase in the hourly federal minimum wage to $15, rising to $20 in the future.
UNIVERSAL HEALTHCARE AND TAX REFORM
Dobson proposes a publicly administered, single payer system providing healthcare for all. “The plan will be funded by eliminating exorbitant corporate profits, through administrative reform, and above all through a federally-funded biomedical research program.” This crash program, on the scale of the Manhattan Project, would discover new and more effective treatments and cures for the main critical diseases currently afflicting humanity.
Comprehensive income tax reform is also squarely in Dobson’s sights. She wants to triple the earned income tax credit and raise the standard deduction for individuals and couples filing jointly to $25,000 each. “Under my plan, a family of four would pay no federal income tax on their first $125,000 of income,” Dobson explained. Instead, ultra-wealthy taxpayers with adjusted gross incomes over $25 million would pay up to 90% of their unearned income in taxes, as they did during the FDR-Eisenhower-JFK years.
One of Dobson’s most important measures is the immediate impeachment and removal from office of both Bush and Cheney. Otherwise, she said, all effective measures to deal with the Bush economic depression will be crippled by presidential vetoes. “I will also begin impeachment proceedings against the RATS (Roberts-Alito-Thomas-Scalia) clique of the Supreme Court, in case they attempt to sabotage this emergency economic recovery program under the color of judicial review.”
