(EstateNewsWire.com, December 27, 2012 ) Olathe, KS -- Residents will be able to feel a bit safer during winter after the Ionia Department of Public Safety purchased a new grass fire truck.
The 2012 Ford F-350 has four-wheel drive and a crew cab, along with a 6.2 liter engine and a 13 HP fire pump. The vehicle also comes equipped with a water and foam tank, horses, ground sweep nozzles that are mounted on the front brush guard, and plenty of other equipment.
The new rig is set to be out during the spring when brush fires typically begin to spring up, according to IDPS Department Director John Odette. Emergency calls regarding grass fires can from from as little as 3 to as many as 15 in the season. The IDPS will also be capable of responding to mutual aid calls from surrounding communities.
During the winter months, the machine will be utilized as a “people hauler” to fire locations, as well as second truck that is capable of lighting and setting up scenes so firefighters can handle the possible fires, says Odette. The truck is equipped with LED flood lights as well as off-road lighting capabilities.
The rig is fitted with Mickey Thompson 35-inch off-road tires that are capable of handling a good deal of punishment, as well as inclement weather. This will come in handy during the winter when there is heavy snowfall that can impede response and rescue missions.
“It’s a multi-purpose truck that we’ll use as much as possible,” Odette said. All-told, the truck rain the two towns $90,000. With $20,000 being paid by each city, and the city of Ionia fitting the balance.
Along with the truck, the IDPS received 23 self-contained breath apparatus packs, bottles, and more, all of which was purchased with grant money from FEMA's Assistance to Firefighters program.
