(EstateNewsWire.com, February 11, 2013 ) Birmingham, AL -- Britain's largest supermarkets have been attempting to defend the practices and standards thy partake in after a report suggested that half the world’s food is thrown away.
The Institution of Mechanical Engineers stated that the waste was being caused by poor storage, as well as strict sell-by dates, and bulk offers. Some businesses pointed to consumer complaints as well.
The British Retail Consortium stated that supermarkets have “adopted a range of approaches” to combat the problems of waste. The same group also lobbied the EU to relax the laws that restrict the sale of misshaped produce, as long as the food is not in danger of being spoiled or contaminated.
According to the report released, Global Food; Waste Not, Want Not, from the UK-based institution, as much as 50% of the food around the world is wasted, which amounts to nearly two billion tons.
In its study, the group claims that nearly 30% of veggies in the UK were not harvested due to nothing more than their physical appearance.
The reports have noted that somewhere between a third and a half of the four billion tons of food that are produced each year are wasted. The report did suggest that half of the food brought into Europe, as well as the United States, is thrown away.
Dr. Tim Fox, who heads the energy and environment at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers stated that
“The amount of food wasted and lost around the world is staggering. This is food that could be used to feed the world's growing population - as well as those in hunger today.”
“It is also an unnecessary waste of the land, water and energy resources that were used in the production, processing and distribution of this food.”
“The reasons for this situation range from poor engineering and agricultural practices, inadequate transport and storage infrastructure through to supermarkets demanding cosmetically perfect foodstuffs and encouraging consumers to overbuy through buy-one-get-one-free offers.”
