(EstateNewsWire.com, February 28, 2013 ) West Bloomfield, MI – Watch and clock repair might be a great hobby, but DIY grandfather clock repair is not recommended by the local expert. A grandfather clock, especially an antique, requires extensive knowledge. Newer replicas are somewhat easier to work on, but the antique cannot be duplicated if it becomes damaged, so only a qualified technician should be trusted with something this valuable.
Grandfather clocks are a beautiful, tall clock with time regulated by the pendulum which swings behind the glass inside the case. Weights, gears and wheels work together to control the movement of the pendulum as time moves forward. Some grandfather clocks are beautifully decorated and feature moon dials and calendar wheels. Each moving part must function perfectly and one small problem can bring time to a standstill.
Fred Bartholomew, owner of All Clocks Repaired, has been in the business for over 40 years and he is the expert trusted by Metro Detroit residents for grandfather clock repair. He will provide some troubleshooting tips, but he does not recommend DIY grandfather clock repair.
Some of the most common problems the grandfather clock repair man addresses include:
Pendulum not swinging – Grandfather clocks are extremely sensitive to changes in position and movement can knock them off balance. The clock must be perfectly level, from side to side and from front to back.
Moon dial not turning – The clock spring, located behind the moon dial, may need adjusting. Carefully pull it back about a half inch from the teeth of the moon dial then allow it to fall back into place. Do not force it to turn!
Chimes at the wrong time – The hands need to be adjusted. This must be done very carefully, by removing the minute hand and adjusting the hand bushing with pliers. Never reset the hour hand or push the minute hand!
Unlike new grandfather clocks, few come with a service manual, so the clock repair expert recommends very limited, if any DIY repair and troubleshooting. This beautiful antique is often priceless (to the owner) and irreplaceable, so it should only be repaired by an experienced and knowledgeable specialist.
All Clocks Repaired is the expert to rely on for antique clock repair service. Unlike many large clock repair companies, Fred offers free pick-up and delivery for grandfather clocks. He knows that fixing the clock in the customers’ home when possible provides peace of mind that their treasured antiques and precious family heirlooms will not be damaged during transportation.
