(EMAILWIRE.COM, April 18, 2009 ) OK, now I can take a certain amount of anti-British comments, but being told that we Brits have zero imagination when it comes to decorating our homes is hard to swallow – so what if my entire flat is painted in magnolia and all my furniture is beige – neutral is best, isn’t it?...
A new survey by paint makers Crown has found that a teeny two per cent of UK property owners rate the styling of their homes as very imaginative, meaning that the rest of us consider our homes to beÂ…wellÂ…dull.
Is it any wonder than DIY store Homebase sells twice as much magnolia paint paint as the next most popular colour – since we are always hearing how neutral is best and lighter colours make rooms look larger.
(PS. The second most popular colour is the daring, living-life-on-the-edge Primrose Yellow).
Out of 1,000 people surveyed, 90 per cent of British homeowners said that they lacked imagination in general – a terrifying indictment of today’s society where we are all served news and stories in ‘twitter’ sized bites before we lose interest and stop reading.
We also watch a hell of a lot of TV- taking the majority of our influences from home makeover style programmes and celebrity designers.
According to the survey, almost half of the UK feels the urge to redecorate after seeing a stunning room set on screen. The sets on programmes such as Desperate Housewives prove more popular than the eternal drabness of the Eastenders homes. (Though Tanya and Max did push the boat out with some hideous turquoise flock wallpaper which brightened up Walford – for a bit).
We also take inspiration from foreign countries, such as the Mediterranean - 40 per cent of home owners adore the characteristically Mediterranean features such as textured walls, sandy colour schemes and terracotta fittings. Quite how well a mosaic courtyard fits with a bungalow in Bognor is, quite frankly, beside the point.
Following hot on the MedÂ’s heels is the minimalist, cool Scandinavian tones, the rustic chic of rural France and the glamour of North America.
Art proves the most popular inspiration for young home owners. Those in their twenties consider themselves both original and inventive, whereas the 45+ age group consider themselves, and their homes, to be mundane. In total, 40 per cent of British homeowners believe that the interior of their homes is dull.
The nation is also divided geographically in terms of imagination and inspiration. According to Crown, cosmopolitan Londoners consider themselves the most cool and creative in the UK, whereas homeowners in Northern Ireland and the Midlands class themselves as duller and more conventional.
