(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 15, 2009 ) London, UK - It seems the childhood home of Goldenballs – once tipped for sale at £1 million - failed to go for gold this week as it was withdrawn from auction after being unable to attract any bids above the drastically reduced £215,000 guide price…
The three-bedroom Victorian terraced home in Leytonstone, east London, was originally put onto the market for a cool £850,000, with the owner hoping that the Beckham effect would entice eager fans to part with the cash.
But the property on Norman Road, surrounded by other identical homes worth around £200,000, failed failed to attract genuine interest at this inflated price and so was put up for auction through Savills.
The property auction was meant to have taken place on Monday but, as the property failed to attract any bids above the drastically reduced guide price of £2150,000, it was withdrawn from the sale.
Beckham had lived in the house as a small child before he and his family moved to Chingford in Essex. He was already playing footie in east London – for the under-10 side Ridgeway Rovers team.
Local estate agent Colin Evans discovered the house’s link to the famous footballer whilst he was researching Leytonstone’s local heroes for a book he is planning to write. He then contacted the owner, Mr Iftakar Mahmood, who decided to sell up and Mr Evans hoped that they could achieve a price of as much as £1 million.
Mr Evans said, “My faith in ‘brand Beckham’ is 100 per cent still. The main thing is that he is bigger than most people around the world.
“I think I could still get double the market value of the property or more.
“I’ve received a call from someone in Monaco with an offer for Mr Mahmood, the owner, of £750,000,” he added.
Mr Evans claims the mystery bidder from Monaco is still interested and the deal may still go ahead.
Mr Evans had previously said that there had been several offers around the £1 million mark but the significantly lower auction price throws this into question.
Whilst Brand Beckham has certainly given this rather ordinary UK property fifteen minutes of fame, it seems the credit crunch has gone some way to capping the once limitless and priceless thirst for celebrity.
