(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 17, 2009 ) UK - Some of us Brits are well known for being of the ‘glass half empty’ mentality – and new research has found that, despite house prices falling to their lowest level since 1995, a third of Britons believe that owning their own home is something they will never achieve…
Housing association Circle Anglia found the belief that owning your own home was an impossible dream to be even more prevalent in certain age groups and certain wage brackets.
Nearly half of those aged between 35 and 44 or those earning less than £15,000 a year believed that they would never own their own own their own UK property.
Circle Anglia conducted the survey to raise awareness of shared ownership schemes such as New Build HomeBuy, which offer first time buyers who couldnÂ’t otherwise afford their own home the security of having a share in their own property, often for the same price or less than private rental.
The beliefs also had a geographical slant with people living in the South West the most pessimistic about their chances of ever becoming home-owners.
More than half of people in that area felt that way whereas only one in five Londoners worried about not getting their own home - the lowest figure for any region in the UK.
Andy Doylend, Executive Director of Operations for Circle Anglia, said, “While house prices have fallen dramatically over the past year, they are still around six times more than the average salary of £25,000.
“This has led many people to believe that they won’t ever have the security of owning their own home – because they are unaware of the options available to them.
“Shared Ownership schemes such as New Build HomeBuy offer an affordable low risk way of getting a high quality flat or home to make your own, and we are seeing an increase in people choosing this option,” added Mr Doylend.
