(EMAILWIRE.COM, October 18, 2009 ) UK - Being a parent must be a rather thankless task at times – the endless taxi service and cash point they are under pressure to provide – so now Mums and Dads are taking back the reins and turning the obligatory drop-offs into holidays – university towns all over the country are enjoying a tourist boom from parents dropping their children off and then holidaying in the town afterwards…
Research from travel company Expedia.co.uk found that mini breaks in university towns have soared over the last year.
Parents who are forced to make the often long journeys with car loads of their precious offspringÂ’s essentials (thanks Dad), are then deciding to make the most of the town afterwards and enjoy a short holiday there themselves.
Oxford, Sheffield, Leeds and Cambridge are among the towns which have shown a huge increase in website searches by holidaymakers.
The Expedia website looked at which towns had shown the greatest increases in searches and found that Oxford – the city of dreaming spires – was up a whopping 184 per cent.
Sheffield was up 148 per cent, followed by York (up 121 per cent), Belfast (up 116 per cent), Leeds (up 106 per cent) and Cambridge (up 104 per cent).
An Expedia Spokeswoman said, “Parents are turning the university drop-off into a mini-break.
“September was a record month for British university destinations,” she added.
