(EMAILWIRE.COM, September 21, 2011 ) Ilkley, UK -- Ilkley is a spa town situated in West Yorkshire, in the north of England, built on the south bank and valley of the River Wharfe. IlkleyÂ’s rich heritage and surrounding glorious countryside makes tourism a main local industry, where manufacturing and engineering prosper. The most known, however, include NG Bailey, one of the UK's leading providers of building services, including mechanical, electrical, ICT, off-site manufacture, and maintenance solutions, The Woolmark Company, a well-established provider of all natural, high-quality woollen products, and Spooner Industries, a worldwide manufacturer of industrial process machinery such as industrial ovens, dryers, coolers, proofers, air-turns, stabilisers, oxidisers and energy recovery equipment. Worth mentioning is also the Ilkley Brewery Company Ltd, which was founded in Ilkley in 1873, and operates as a brewery company producing bottled beers and
other seasonal beers that are sold across the United Kingdom. Most of the local Ilkley jobs come from these afore mentioned companies.
Ilkley has a thriving town centre, characterised by stylish Victorian architecture and high in number small independent shops which, not surprisingly, makes it a main tourist attraction and destination. There’s no exaggeration in calling Ilkley “a shopping town” which, although quite expensive, sells everything from top quality wine, fashions and fine art. The town is also one of the very few places across England that has Bettys, the Yorkshire tea room, famous for its fine teas, coffees, handcrafted cakes and confectionery. Of particular note is the Michelin-starred Box Tree restaurant where Marco Pierre White trained, and an award-winning butcher shop whose owner, David Lishman, became one of Rick Stein’s, a popular media chef, superheroes in 2003. The town has also been recognized for its beauty and excellence in horticultural displays by winning a few prestigious contests, including the international competition Entente Florale in 1990, and twice, in 1990 and 2004, the ‘Britain in Bloom’ contest in the category of ‘Town’.
Ilkley has also quite a lot to offer in terms of art and culture. One of the main attractions and must-see spots is certainly the Manor House, one of IlkleyÂ’s oldest buildings, now converted into a museum and art gallery. The museum contains prehistoric artefacts and remains of documents the Roman fort of Olicana, which are displayed at the back of the building, as well as the rise of Ilkley as a Victorian spa. Other historical attractions include the Old Bride, dated from 1675, and located nearby All SaintÂ’s Church which was founded before the Norman Conquest. There is also Ilkley Toy Museum with its remarkable collection of toys, some of which are dated for as early as 350 BC. Nature lovers and walkers can enjoy unlimited and free access to Ilkley moors and marvel at the spectacular views across Wharfedale. In addition, there are opportunities for rock climbing on the Cow and Calf Rocks and in Rocky Valley.
Ilkley is within the travel-to-work radius of two large metropolitan boroughs in West Yorkshire, Leeds and Bradford. Services provided by the urban district council are now run centrally by the City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council. Railway connection offers about 35 trains to each destination per day, which are run twice an hour from Ilkley railway station, and the journey takes just 30 minutes. There are also frequently operating buses going from Ilkley bus station to Bradford and Leeds, and the main operators are First Leeds, Jacksons, Transdev, Keighley and District and Pride of the Dales. Ilkley lies on the A65 road and the nearest significant motorways are M62 at Bradford, and the M1 at Leeds, and getting there takes Yorkshire job commuters traveling by car usually around 30 minutes drive.
