Karl Fischer Sculptures to Be Auctioned April 28

(EMAILWIRE.COM, April 25, 2007 ) Pleasant Valley, N.Y.: The Ironman isn’t just a race in Hawaii. It is also a fitting title for Karl Fischer, a talented art blacksmith who made a career out of fashioning hunks of unassuming metal into critically-acclaimed sculptures, furniture and other handcrafted objets d’art. On April 28, selected works from Fischer will be auctioned to the highest bidder at the Absolute Auction Center in Pleasant Valley, N.Y. One of the best-known pieces, which was described by art critic Georgette Gouveia in an April 28, 1991, Journal News review as a sculpture “whose fanciful birdlike images recall Chagall,” will delight and fascinate bidders with its intricate hand-forged craftsmanship and abstract whimsy. Another standout is a 1984 steel-and-bronze sculpture of a sailing ship that Fischer’s notes indicate required 300 hours of labor. And hard labor it was, considering a work environment that included temperatures close to 2,000 degrees and an unwavering artistic commitment to using only hand tools and Old World techniques. In fact, bidders will be able to see the primary tool of Fischer’s trade for themselves: included in the auction is the forge he used to create his extraordinary works of art.Born in New York in 1929, Karl Fischer moved to Europe at age 7 when his parents returned to their native Germany. He began studying his craft at 14 under the tutelage of his father, master iron artist Fred Fischer. He also trained and sculpted under two additional master artists. At age 18, Fischer passed the craft exams with honors and returned to the United States. After earning a living in the auto body trade for several years, Fischer set up shop as an artist in 1957, opening County Ornamental Iron Works in White Plains, N.Y. Over the years, his functional wrought iron railings and furniture, and his decorative metal sculptures, brought him commercial and artistic success. One of Fischer’s earlier works, a hand-forged ornamental chest that was later placed on exhibit at National Ornamental Metal Museum, garnered these words of praise from the museum’s assistant director, Judy Wallace: “What a grand piece of craftsmanship….[I] commend you on an outstanding body of work.”Additional recognition included publication in the New York Times, The Anvil Ring magazine, and Fabricator magazine, as well as an award at the Top Job Gallery and Art Exhibit Competition. Fischer also worked with sculptor Otello Garducci and was commissioned to enlarge and copy a Picasso in bronze medium for a corporate headquarters location. When completed, the impressive hand-wrought piece was over seven feet tall.Absolute’s April 28 auction will include about a dozen Fischer pieces in all, ranging from large garden sculptures to tabletop candleholders. Preview times are Friday, April 27, from 3-8pm and Saturday, April 28, from 3pm to sale time. The auction will begin at 5pm on Saturday, and live Internet bidding will be available on all items. For further information, including a complete auction catalog, visit AARauctions.com after 6pm on Tuesday, April 24, or call (800) 243-0061 during the above preview hours to speak with the Absolute Auction Center team.___________________________ The Absolute Auctions Team Absolute Auctions & Realty, Inc.
