Firefighters quickly stopped the blaze which started in a clothes dryer in the basement and spread to the second floor through air ducts. Heavy smoke filled the building and also affected neighboring Bistro Les Gras. The Bistro will remain closed pending a Board of Health Inspection.
Another clothes dryer fire caused around $10,000 in damage to an apartment building. There were no serious injuries, but one woman was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation but was not taken to the hospital.
“Dryer fires are caused by a combination of heat and blockage of air flow. If there is a lint build-up in the system then you have the combustibles needed to start a fire,” Dickson explained. “When a fire occurs in a public place or apartment building, even more lives are at risk. Anyone who owns a clothes dryer needs dryer vent cleaning.”
