In joining efforts with the NFPA, Dryer Vent Wizard provides advice to consumers to minimize the risk of dryer fires. Ed Rauch, owner of Dryer Vent Wizard of Cincinnati was recently interviewed. Ed explained the importance of dryer vent cleaning. “As lint accumulates in the dryer duct it blocks airflow and prevents heat and moisture from escaping. As the dryer labors to get clothes dry, the system overheats and eventually becomes a fire hazard.”
According to Ed Rauch, professional dryer vent installation and regular dryer vent cleaning is recommended each year to remove lint build-up so the dryer operates safely and efficiently. “Some homeowners prefer to do it themselves rather than pay for professional services. Dryer vent cleaning is easy when the dryer ducts are short and easily accessible, but some systems require special tools and equipment. It is critical that the entire dryer vent system be cleaned, not just the easy to access areas. Lint goes everywhere.”
Ed explained that in some newer homes the laundry area is located upstairs in the center of the structure, near bedrooms where most laundry originates, rather than near an outside wall on the ground floor. It is especially important that the longer dryer ducts be installed properly to ensure adequate air flow. “If you are not sure that your dryer vent system is properly installed then it wouldn’t hurt to have an inspection performed by a dryer exhaust technician,” said Rauch. “The dryer vent system is often overlooked by new home inspectors, so just because your home is new does not mean the dryer vent system was properly installed.”
