(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 10, 2012 ) Lafayette IN -- Granite countertops are among the most popular additions in kitchens and bathrooms. For building new homes or remodeling existing homes, most agree that granite countertops provide a look of prestige and elegance. While most appreciate the appearance of granite countertops, few people are aware of the process of bringing granite home.
Consumers who visit the Surface Encounters granite countertops showroom enjoy hearing from an expert who shares information about the granite excavating and manufacturing process.
The process of creating elegant granite countertops begins with finding quality granite. Geologists prospect for granite by conducting core samples in the earth to locate rock formations where granite exists. Granite mines exist around the world and the United States has a large number of granite mines. The majority of these mines are located in the eastern part of the United States.
When granite is located the mining operation to extract the granite from the ground begins. Large excavating machines are brought to the site and a quarry is built to hold the granite blocks while miners work to extract the hard granite from the earth.
The granite is then removed from the earth with large saws and massive drilling rigs which cut the granite into large slabs. The granite slabs are cut and removed in a uniform shape to allow for the transporting process of these large natural stones.
Once the granite is excavated and taken to the quarry, it is sorted by color and transported to a processing plant. At the processing plant the granite slabs are sorted for imperfections, such as foreign material or stress cracks. Once inspected the granite is prepared for processing.
Granite is one of the hardest rocks extracted for construction purposes and the only type of cutting edge that will cut the hard stone is a diamond blade or a granite blade designed for cutting such a large block. Large saws designed for this processing cut the granite into long pieces of 2 to 3 inches in thickness each.
At this point the granite is ready for order to be finished into granite countertops by countertop makers like Surface Encounters. Customers are given the color options available and when they have selected a color an order will be placed to the processing plant for the amount of material needed.
When the granite arrives to the contractor there is still additional work to be done. The contractor must measure the counter space and cut the granite to fit the homeownerÂ’s specifications. When the contractor has finished cutting and polishing the granite countertop it may then be installed in oneÂ’s home.
Granite countertops, once installed in oneÂ’s home, will add value to the structure and provide years and years of pleasure, but the journey the stone takes from the earth to oneÂ’s home is an arduous one. Visit http://www.granitecountertopslafayetteindiana.com/ to learn more.
