Both fighters were present at the press conference and they tried their best to look tough and sell this charade but it was all more than a little sad. Here were two, former world class champions, being paraded about by the biggest snake oil salesman in sports history and the implication was stunning. No matter how ridiculous this match up between these old titans is, people will pay good money to watch it. Therein lays Don King's double sided genius.RECENT BOUTS RECRUITED FANS! A sad fact about boxing is that despite wonderful bouts like the recent Israel Vazquez-Rafael Marquez rematch, or even the Erik Morales-David Diaz war, not many sports fans follow boxing anymore unless there are recognizable names. When I mentioned the Marquez-Vazquez rematch to a buddy of mine he asked me if he should get Showtime that weekend because he was having a party and a good fight would be cool background noise. I told him, this fight won’t be just noise, it will be an explosion. He didn’t get the fight because no one had ever heard of the fighters. They’re brand names so they sell. That's why Don King has jumped on this sinking ship. Once he reaps the benefits he'll take the only lifeboat and sail off to the next rip off.PAY FOR VIEW, NOT PAY PER VIEWThis potential fight, which may never be finalized knowing firsthand how ridiculous Roy Jones can be during negotiations, troubles me because it lowers the bar for boxing right to the ground. If it would be on free TV or even ESPN then I would turn away and not be annoyed. But should it come off it will get the media attention that so many terrific young fighters like Vazquez and Marquez deserve but don't get and King and whatever media outlet sells the fight will charge people like my aforementioned friend fifty bucks to watch it. No doubt, King will load the under card with crap so the space cadets watching can get at least a six pack in their belly by the time the main event comes on. By then, no matter how bad the fight, those fans won't be feeling much anyway. I've always felt that was why King and his equally duplicitous nemesis Bob Arum so often stocked their under cards with dreck. It's all business with you. I can't really blame you for that, but I can thumb my nose at you. You're not getting my money pal. I can watch my DVDs of Trinidad and Jones when they were in their respective primes and smile. Not in their glorious primes but at their faltering, sad ends. I didn’t want to see that and I don't want to see this either. Look, it'll make money.
