(EstateNewsWire.com, August 01, 2012 ) Petosky, MI – While convenience is desired by most homeowners when deciding where to place a dumpster for a clean-out project, demolition or remodeling project, safety should be uppermost in one’s mind.
Dumpster rental roll-off trucks can weigh more than thirteen tons when empty. Add twelve to fifteen tons of loaded dumpster to the equation and one can see the possibility for damaged lawns, cracked concrete and damaged asphalt driveways. Homeowners must consider this possibility when ordering a dumpster rental. Tell a local dumpster rental representative where the dumpster is to be placed and leave markers in the area, such as blocks of wood arranged on the driveway or stakes in the yard, to let the driver know where the dumpster is to be set, especially if one is not going to be home at the time of delivery. A good example of the possibility of safety problems is a home roofing tear-off project. Most roofers will want the dumpster as close to the roof as possible, usually in the yard next to the house. However, a homeowner needs to be aware of the possibility of damage to the yard, shrubs, flower beds, etc. when placing the dumpster. A 20-yard dumpster full of shingles will weigh about 15 tons and will sink into soft ground as it is filled. If the ground is wet, the heavy roll-off truck could possibly make ruts in the yard or even get stuck, which will result in costly yard work to repair the damage. The combined weight of the truck and the loaded dumpster could exceed 25 tons. The best area to place a dumpster rental is in the driveway.
If the driveway is surfaced with gravel, no problem, but if it is concrete, especially newer concrete or asphalt, the homeowner should place sheets of plywood down where the dumpster is to be set to protect the driveway. This is a common practice and the driver of the roll-off truck will know to place the dumpster on the plywood.
Overhead obstacles should also be considered when placing a dumpster on the property. If a dumpster is placed near the house, roof overhangs and storm gutters may be a problem to the driver when placing the dumpster.
Overhead wires and tree branches could also be potential problems. When a hauler delivers a roll-off dumpster, the rails of the truck on which the dumpster is sitting will actually be raised to a height of 20 feet or more, depending on the size of the dumpster rental. Once the boom is raised, the dumpster box will “roll off” the rails via an electric wench cable. Homeowners are advised to stand at least twenty feet from the truck when the dumpster is being delivered in case the cable breaks or the dumpster slides off the truck incorrectly when being lowered onto the ground.
When the dumpster is being loaded onto the truck after being filled, the homeowner should stand clear in case debris falls off of the truck when the dumpster is being loaded. Large items should be placed in the bottom of the dumpster and lighter items should be placed on the top. The dumpster will be tarped by the driver before being hauled away, so one must not load the dumpster any higher than the top rail. Most dumpsters will have a line painted on the dumpster to show how high the debris can be placed. Where ever a homeowner decides to place a dumpster, safety should be the number one item considered.
