The Skiing
Val d'Isère is most recognizable by its charming ‘chalet’ architecture. Along with nearby Tignes the area forms part of the "l'Espace Killy", the self-titled ‘Most Beautiful Ski Area in the World.’
The three main ski areas - Bellevarde, Solaise and Col de lÂ’Iseran - offer pistes to suit all levels of skiers and its superb range of accommodation together with its modern and efficient services, makes it particularly popular with families.
New hands free skiing and snowboarding has been introduced for the 2007/2008 winter season at Val d'Isere. The hands free ski pass automatically enables lift access without staff manually checking passes ensuring less crowd congestion.
The lower slopes of Le Fornet are quieter and less crowded than the upper areas; catch the Fornet Cable Car then the Vallon De LÂ’Iseran Gondola, for long winding transitional trails back down to the valley floor.
Snowboarding - There is an excellent terrain park at La Daille and also in Tignes. The off piste run over to Tignes provides a phenomenal challenge for all standards of rider.
Ever popular, the resort will host the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2009, which will increase the profile even more and create a hub of activity in the build up to the games.
Off Piste
The world-famous resort of Val d’Isère is set high in the mountains of the Savoie département in France, close to the border of Italy.
Val d'Isère itself is located in a steep valley and split into a number of villages. These challenging slopes have been attracting hard core skiers since the resort opened for downhill skiing in the mid 1930s.
Other activities at Val dÂ’Isere include cross country skiing, ice driving, snow shoeing, snowmobiling, husky drawn sleigh rides, ice climbing, swimming, ice skating and helicopter tours. For more relaxing activities try a French cooking class, yoga class or have a massage or beauty treatment.
Unlike many other French ski resorts Val d’Isère has a lively and cosmopolitan après ski atmosphere. Shopping is a real delight, from first class technical ski shops to a mouth-watering patisserie. Late nights are almost obligatory for the party animals at Cafe Face or Club 21. For the fitness fan there is also the indoor pool and superb sports centre.
Dan Johnson, Managing Director, comments:
“Despite the long airport transfer time for foreign visitors, the quality of the skiing is so varied and demanding that Val d’Isère has a keen following amongst skiers who would not consider skiing anywhere else.”
