(EMAILWIRE.COM, April 27, 2011 ) After the freak hailstorm that hit the Phoenix metro area last October, roofing contractors, roofing storm chasers, and insurance claim adjusters descended on the city and it’s surrounding areas. The hailstorm created the perfect opportunity for roofing scams and insurance fraud. Many property owners in a panic signed “open” contracts that allowed the roofing contractor to charge whatever they could get away with the property owners insurance company. Unfortunately, the unsuspecting property owner’s insurance company may have over paid for the roof.
“A lot of these of these “roofing storm chasers” come equipped with their own insurance adjusters, which bill the insurance companies thousands of dollars over what a roof should cost,” Says Nicholas Bryditzki, A HAAG Engineering certified roof inspector and licensed contractor. “I have inspected properties where Roofing Storm Chasers have installed the roofs incorrectly and have over charged the insurance companies, the sad part is that the property owner is stuck with sub standard workmanship and higher premiums.”
Bryditzki stated, “A lot of local roofers got on the “Roofing Gravy Train” and we all will be stuck with higher premiums because of this type of practice.”
These suspicious claims can cause everyone’s insurance rates to rise. “Insurance fraud is not a victimless crime,” said The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) President and CEO Joe Wehrle. “It affects all consumers who buy insurance because the money lost to fraud is recovered, in part, through higher premiums.
