(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 20, 2011 ) Phoenix, AZ- After the hailstorm that hit Phoenix last October thousands of Arizona homeowners received insurance settlement for hail damaged roofs. Choosing a good and reputable roofing contractor was difficult enough, but after hundreds of out of state roofing storm chasers descended on Phoenix and unsuspecting homeowners had no idea who they were hiring.
Many out of state storm chasing roofers teamed up with small local roofing contractors, bringing in their own roofing installers and high-pressure sales pros. While this is frowned upon by the Arizona Registrar of Contractors and in most cases violates local laws. Many small and starving roofing contractors succumbed to the temptation of “Big Money” offered by theses out of state roofing storm chasers. “The sad part is most homeowners really thought they were dealing with a local contractor, after the rain the other day my office is getting roof leak calls on newly installed roofs, because homeowners are getting no response from the local number they call” stated Nicholas Bryditzki, The Roof Medic and HAAG Engineering certified roof inspector.
Even though many roofing storm chasers have left the area for greener pastures and easier victims, some still maintain offices and send out door-to-door sales solicitors offering new roofs to unsuspecting homeowners for their insurance allowance. The victim’s sign blank contractors thinking they are getting a new roof for free only to realize they may be stuck holding the bag and worse have questionable workmanship of their new roof. Bryditzki adds, “Their sales pros get paid a commission based on the profit of the job sometimes as high as 40%, so trying to soak as much money out of the insurance company is common practice… In the end we will all pay for this storm with higher insurance rates.”
Bryditzki suggest getting 3 quotes from three local roof contractors, check them out, ask point blank if they have teamed up a with any out of state roofers, and by all means NEVER SIGN a blank contract!
