(EMAILWIRE.COM, June 04, 2011 ) United Kingdom -- Due to the economic and financial crisis in recent times, consumers around the nation and in many developing countries around the world affected by the global recession are cutting down on often unnecessary large purchases such as holidays, shopping for designer clothing, or even furniture throughout the house.
With this in mind, people are now turning their attention to what is known as C.I.Y. C.I.Y actually means “Creating It Yourself” as reported by Stoke/Stockport Terrys Fabrics.
Due to the popularity of “Creating It Yourself” there has been been an increase in the number of sewing machine sales over the last three years. Due to the fact that people are spending far less and being a lot more cautious with their money and financial security, people are also looking to adapt their existing furniture and create things by hand, without the need to spend large amounts of money on often unnecessary purchases.
With this increase of sewing machine sales, there has also been a massive rise in the amount of fabrics that have been purchased, especially over the last year. People are now choosing to make their own home-made curtains, tablecloths, sofa covers, cushion covers and many other household items which would otherwise cost large amounts of money. Aside from this, consumers are also starting to make their own chairs, sofas, footrests and many other household furniture from raw materials. This not only saves oney, but also makes the home more inviting and cosy for its residents.
The director of Terrys Fabrics stated:
With the recent introduction of TV programmes that promote the idea of C.I.Y by creating things such as furniture and curtains with a minimal budget, the nation has caught on and are spending less and less on unnecessary items. Many of our existing customers are now starting to ask for advice regarding specific sewing projects for the home and therefore our staff has had to begin the process of educating themselves over correct measurement of materials and also advice regarding our customerÂ’s proposed C.I.Y projects.
