(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 21, 2012 ) Arlington, Virginia – Quilting has always been a passion for Kyra E. Hicks. She has researched quilters as well as had her own quilts displayed in museums and art galleries across the United States. Now, however, she is on a new mission; a mission to help the 21 million quilters in the US to preserve records of their own quilts for posterity.
"Quilters in the US spend $3.58 billion a year on their quilting. This is a serious investment of both time and money. I am excited about the possibility for quilters to produce printed catalogs of their works, to show their quilts in their splendor, or just to pass their sewing techniques and inspirations on to other quilters” says Kyra.
She was also prompted by a dearth of catalogs by gallery owners to promote their quilting exhibits.
“I noticed there was a real lack of knowledge concerning how easy it is to create and publish a full-color catalog to promote their quilts. I've met wonderful textile artists who didn't even consider self-publishing a catalog of their works as they thought it would be too difficult or expensive. I realized that this was an area where quilters and textile artists needed help from someone who knows their craft and what they want to achieve with a book,” she adds.
“Self-publishing quilting books is nothing new," Kyra continues, "I recently came across a series of self-published quilt patterns from the 1970's by the late quiltmaker and designer Dolores A. Hinson. Some of her books were stapled together with hand drawn images. Now, however, with all the modern technology available to us, anyone with access to Microsoft Word and the Internet can produce their own, high-quality record of their quilts, their techniques, their quilt research, or their exhibitions."
Saying anyone can do it is one thing; showing people how to do it is another, which is why Kyra has set up a blog http://publishyourquilts.blogspot.com which from March 26, will show quilters, textile artists, quilting guilds and galleries how to make and produce their own art catalog using CreateSpace.
"I will show you step by step how to concept and layout your full-color 24 or 36 page art catalog, as well as how to write it, publish it and promote it. I even talk about how to get it listed on Amazon.com so you can share your quilting with the world,” Kyra concludes.
And for people who can't wait to read all the blog posts, Kyra has produced a workbook "How to Self-Publish Your Own Quilt Catalog: A Workbook for Quilters, Guilds, Galleries and Textile Artists."
