(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 21, 2012 ) Commerce, MI--There is many types of waste that occur in the U.S., E waste or electronic waste, construction waste and debris and even food waste. This food waste is naturally occurring waste, for example: vegetable scraps, fruit rinds, and food leftovers. While considered biodegradable, many homeowners are still looking for ideas and information on how to properly get rid of their food waste.
Commerce Township Dumpster reminds us that food waste, though naturally occurring, should not be place in the regular trash bin. Food waste instead should be packed separately. Commerce Township Dumpster Man shares with us a couple of green ways in which a homeowner can properly take care of food waste and invites residents to help support the “Go Green” movement.
1. Create Compost: Two things are needed in a compost, green waste and brown waste. Green Waste is created from: Vegetable peelings, fruit, tea bags, coffee grounds, grass clippings, old flowers, and green leaves. This adds nitrogen to the compost. It decomposes faster acting like a catalyst to the pile. Brown Waste is created from: Paper, dry leaves, magazines, twigs and wood chippings create brown waste. This adds carbon to the compost. It does not decompose as quickly but is important to the composting pile. Having a balance between these two elements is crucial.
Commerce Twp. Dumpster Man reminds residents not to add meat or dairy to the pile, as this will entice pests in your garden.
2. Create a Worm Bin: This process involves using worms and while it is like composting, the time is much shorter. Red worms are recommended because they are much easier to obtain. The bin itself can vary from a small inside bin, where one places clean bedding in the top and then takes out the bottom bin, to larger sizes for outside bins.
Worms like shredded cardboard or newspapers and old leaves for their bedding. Fill the bin to the top and moisten the bedding, this makes it easy for the worms to crawl around. Do not make the bedding soggy. Add just a couple handfuls of dirt, not much because the Red worms like garbage more than soil. Now add the worms. The basic formula is a 2:1 ratio, or 2lbs of worms for every 1lb of garbage. When adding new garbage, clear a spot in the bedding to bury it. Cover the garbage completely with bedding and keep a loose plastic cover on the bin to help maintain moisture.
Worms are vegetarians so they really like things like apples, banana peels, beans, cereal, cheese, egg shells, fruit rinds, onion peels, pizza crust. These are just a few ideas; worms do not like anything toxic such as the chemicals in junk food, cakes and candies.
. For bigger, bulkier waste that can occur with renovations, landscape and yard clean up, a dumpster will help to keep the area clean and safe. Dumpsters also make the job easier by being able to just toss in ones garbage or debris. No need to bundle and bag the waste. Commerce Township Dumpster carries a variety of sizes for every type of job or project that may come up. Visit their user friendly website or call for more information.
